#makemagichappen
As a photographer, I approach every genre with a deep sense of authenticity and emotion, driven by my dual cultural heritage and the experiences that have shaped me as both a person and an artist. Born in The Netherlands to Hong Kong Chinese parents, I’ve always navigated the delicate balance between two worlds, one rooted in traditional Chinese values and the other embracing the open-minded and progressive attitude of Dutch culture. This duality is a key influence in my work, where themes of identity and legacy are at the forefront, and I continue to explore them as I grow as both an artist and a father.
In 2012, Tang enrolls in the study Photographic Design at the University of Applied Photography in Amsterdam from which he graduated with honours in 2015. That same year, he was awarded the second prize for his project ‘Son, this is your home’ at the Keep an Eye Fotovakschool Grant 2015 by the Keep an Eye Foundation, a foundation that acknowledges and supports upcoming talents in the creative and arts sector. In 2024, Jay Tang was honored with two prestigious international awards: Exposure One Awards Photographer of the Year 2024 – Minimalism and 1839 Awards Photographer of the Year 2024 – Abstract. These accolades recognize his distinctive approach to photography and solidify his standing as a leading artist in both the minimalist and abstract genres.
While my abstract work tells a personal, intimate story, my photography across genres such as Portraits, Beauty, Fashion, Editorials, Boudoir and Nudes is driven by my desire to capture the beauty and complexity of the human experience. I believe that each genre offers its own unique perspective, and my approach is always deeply collaborative, aiming to create images that resonate both emotionally and aesthetically.
In my portrait photography, I seek to capture the raw, authentic essence of the subject. Whether in a studio or on location, I focus on the subject’s personality, allowing their true character to shine through. I believe that a powerful portrait can transcend the surface, offering a glimpse into the soul of the person being photographed.
Beauty photography is an exploration of light, composition, and detail. I work closely with my subjects, makeup artists, and stylists to highlight their natural features, using light and shadow to create a striking yet refined aesthetic. My goal is to craft images that capture both the physical beauty and the unique spirit of the person in front of the camera.
Fashion photography is where creativity and style come together. I approach fashion shoots with a narrative-driven mindset, blending bold styling with compelling storytelling. Each shot is designed to evoke emotion, to not only showcase the garments but also to tell a deeper story about style, identity, and culture.
In editorial work, I embrace the opportunity to collaborate and create cohesive visual narratives. Whether it’s for magazines or personal projects, I enjoy pushing boundaries and exploring new concepts. My aim is always to create work that feels dynamic, thought-provoking, and in tune with contemporary visual culture.
Boudoir photography is an intimate and empowering experience. My goal is to create a relaxed and supportive environment where my subjects feel beautiful, confident, and empowered. Through sensual lighting, creative compositions, and a focus on personal strength, I craft images that celebrate the inherent beauty in every individual.
Nude photography is about celebrating the human form in its most natural and vulnerable state. I approach each shoot with great respect, creating a space where my subjects feel empowered and comfortable. The result is always a fine balance between aesthetic beauty and emotional depth, capturing the purity and strength of the human body.
My work is more than just an image; it’s a reflection of the stories and emotions of those I photograph. Across all the genres I specialize in, my approach is centered around collaboration and respect. I strive to make each session a shared experience, where my subjects feel seen and heard, allowing them to express their true selves. Whether working with individuals or teams, I’m committed to producing work that is both visually stunning and deeply meaningful.
